Structural Characteristics of American-style Transformers and Their Innovative Applications in Modern Power Grids

With the acceleration of the global energy transition, the power grid has increasingly higher requirements for the reliability, safety, and intelligence of distribution equipment. American-style transformers, with their unique design and technical advantages, have become the mainstream choice in the field of medium and low voltage power distribution. This article analyzes their core competitiveness from four aspects: structure, technology, application, and trends.

1. Advantages of Structural Design
It adopts a corrugated fully sealed oil tank, using elastic steel plates to compensate for the changes in oil temperature and isolate moisture and impurities. FR3 natural ester (with a flash point of 360°C) is mostly used as the insulating medium. Its fire resistance is twice that of mineral oil, and it can be 100% biodegraded within 10 days, having obtained multiple environmental protection certifications. The high-voltage components, iron core, and windings are integrated in the same oil tank to form a "fully immersed" structure. The volume of a 300kVA product is only 60% of that of a European-style transformer with the same capacity, which is convenient for underground deployment. The iron core uses low-loss silicon steel sheets and stepped joints, and the windings are wound with foil materials in combination with axial oil ducts, so that the no-load loss of the 500kVA model is ≤1.2kW and the load loss is ≤6.5kW.

2. Technological Innovation and Upgrading
It is equipped with multi-dimensional sensors inside to monitor parameters such as oil temperature and oil level in real time, and realizes cloud-based AI fault prediction through wireless transmission. With high-flash-point insulating oil and strengthened windings, it can support 2 times the overload for 2 hours. The dual-fuse system ensures that the short-circuit protection response time is ≤20ms. The carbon footprint of FR3 oil is only 1.8% of that of mineral oil, and the anti-corrosion service life of the hot-dip galvanized shell exceeds 30 years.

3. Diverse Application Scenarios
In the urban power distribution network, Manhattan in New York has realized the "substation undergrounding", with the power supply reliability reaching 99.99%. In terms of the grid connection of new energy sources, the solar farms in California have reduced the light curtailment rate to below 3% by virtue of the reactive power compensation and overload capacity of American-style transformers. In the industrial field, Tesla factories have adopted low-noise American-style transformers to meet the needs of the workshops, and the integrated solution of Qingdao Tgood has reduced the copper busbar usage by 30%.

American-style transformers have significant advantages in power grid applications due to their characteristics such as full sealing, high fire resistance, and intelligence. In the future, superconducting materials, AI diagnosis, and modular design will promote their development towards high efficiency, greenness, and intelligence.
